SUBJECT & CULTURAL CONTEXT

Subject: An abstract tribal mask or face surrounded by geometric braided borders. The core of the composition features a minimalist, stylized black face with sharp white geometric lines detailing the features, evoking traditional masking traditions. The face is nested inside a complex grid of interlocking, multi-colored blocks framed by textured borders that mimic braided, woven, or knotted fibers—the definitive lifelong signature theme of the artist.

Culture & Movement: French Contemporary Art (specifically Western European Art of the late 20th century). The piece beautifully incorporates elements of Primitivism, Art Brut (Raw Art), and the expressive color blocking of the CoBrA movement, translating global tribal motifs into a masterfully executed European print medium.

CONDITION REPORT

Overall Condition: Excellent Vintage Condition (Frame & Print)

 * The Print (Sheet & Margins): The 1978 etching and aquatint impression remains exceptionally clean and structurally pristine. The colored ink blocks retain full, vibrant saturation with sharp, contrasting black line work. There is no visible fading, UV light damage, wave/buckling, or surface abrasions inside the mat window. The paper shows no signs of foxing, water staining, or age-related browning.
 * The Signature & Numbering: The artist's handwritten pencil signature and the edition number "3/45" along the lower margin are crisp, unfaded, and 100% legible.
 * Matting: The custom, multi-layered colored mat board is clean, securely aligned, and shows no warping, acid-burn line bleeding, or moisture damage. The color borders remain sharp and bright.
 * The Frame: The large 29" x 34" modern black wooden frame is sturdy and structurally sound. The corner joins are tight and square. The outer face shows only negligible, minor cosmetic scuffs/shelf wear typical of vintage gallery displays, which do not distract from presentation.
 * Glass: The glass pane is fully intact, clear, and free of deep scratches, cracks, chips, or clouding.
 * Verso (Backing): The reverse of the frame is fully sealed, stable, and fitted with secure hanging hardware. Ready for immediate display.
