What Are Coupons?
Coupons let you offer discounts to buyers on your listings. There are two kinds:
- Promo codes -- Buyers enter a code at checkout (e.g., "SAVE10") to get a discount
- Auto-apply discounts -- Applied automatically when a buyer checks out, no code needed
How to Get a Coupon
Create coupons yourself from the Discounts page — click "Create Coupon", choose a discount type and amount, and attach it to the listings it should apply to. Quick-start presets (like 10% Off, 20% Off, and BOGO) get you going fast.
Some coupons are also created automatically behind the scenes by timed discounts when your listings qualify.
Types of Discounts
There are three discount types available:
- Percentage off -- A percentage discount on the listing price (e.g., 20% off)
- Fixed dollar off -- A flat dollar amount off the listing price (e.g., $5 off)
- BOGO (Buy One, Get One) -- After a qualifying purchase, the buyer automatically gets a 50% off code for their next purchase from you
How BOGO Works
BOGO is a great way to encourage repeat buyers. Here's how it works:
- A buyer purchases one of your listings that has BOGO enabled
- The buyer receives a 50% off promo code via notification
- The buyer can use that code on their next purchase from you
- Each BOGO code is single-use
Targeting Options
When you set up a coupon, you can configure several targeting options:
- Apply to all your listings, a specific listing, or a category
- Set a minimum purchase amount
- Set usage limits (total redemptions and per-buyer limits)
- Set start and end dates for the promotion
What Buyers See
Auto-apply coupons show up automatically at checkout with the discount already applied. Buyers don't need to do anything.
Code-based coupons have an "Enter promo code" field at checkout where buyers type in the code.
In both cases, the original price is shown with a strikethrough and the discounted price appears below it.
Tips for Using Coupons
- Coupons are a great way to move slow-selling items
- BOGO codes encourage repeat buyers and build loyalty
- Auto-apply coupons convert better than code-based ones since buyers don't need to do anything
- Combine with great photos and descriptions for maximum impact
